Do you ever get frustrated when you are walking your dog and he stops to “smell the roses”? You wait for him to finish but he seems to take forever!  So you call him and he continues to sniff.  I bet you think he is ignoring you… but he isn’t.  Your dog has over 200 million scent receptors in his nose while humans only have 5 million.  Your dog is not only smelling the obvious things you see on the ground, but he may be picking up the scent of another animal or person, or some food, or who knows what!   Imagine if you could smell that well and someone called your name.  Your brain would be so busy processing all the scents you would not be able to pay attention either!   Not allowing your dog to “smell the roses” can actually cause him to be very frustrated.  The next time you take your dog out for a walk, don’t forget to let him “smell the roses”.
